BEATING IMPOSTER SYNDROME
Have you ever felt that youβre good at something and would love to help people in that regard. But you end up not taking any action because of the fear of people judging βWhy will someone listen to me/ follow my guidance/advice?β
We often feel that we are short by something and we donβt have that authority to share that thought or to provide guidance on that topic.
This is called “Imposter Syndrome”. It is a behavioural health phenomenon described asΒ self-doubt of intellect, skills, or accomplishments among individuals.
It is an Uncomfortable feeling when we think we are unqualified and incompetent to own a mastery over a specific topic. This is due to various factors – our personality, upbringing, and work environment etc
To Overcome this, I use a following technique – Whenever I get a thought, I donβt belong here, I am not comfortable, I will start thinking βI am comfortable and this is how It should be, and that is how I grow as a person, this is excitingβ – Learnt this piece of advice from Ali Abdaal. This feeling of inner discomfort, that feeling of anxiety or stress, we could choose to interpret it as fear or excitement.
Also I use this one more technique called βProtege Effectβ from the book – Feel Good Productivity
A philosopher Seneca quoted – βQui docet discitβ meaning βHe who teaches, learnsβ
This is the excerptΒ from the book
And if youβre concerned that youβre not qualified enough to teach someone else, itβs worth remembering that the people we learn from best are often the ones who are just a step ahead of us in the journey. so anyone can become a teacher.
βYou donβt need to be a Guru, You can just be a Guideβ
Yes, as simple as it sounds.Β Teach and you will become betterΒ and itβs not easy, it is an infinite game, somedays we are motivated, others, we feel imposter.Β we canβt win it all at one go but we should just show up everyday!
We need to keep on reassuring ourselves that : Even If I am not capable, itβs okay!
βThe one who teaches, Learnsβ and βThis is how I grow as a person, this is excitingβ.
Hence I choose to start this newsletter from today(24-03-24) and building my website to offer services which I am passionate about.
Keeping the bar low and open for constructive criticism.
One small step at a time, but with a pride, confidence and consistency.
Thank You!

Quote of the week π¬
Artist and educator Corita Kent had a set of rules she often shared with her students. One of them read,
“There is no win and no fail. There is only make.β
What are you making today?

Learning of the Week π
Musician and entrepreneurΒ DerekΒ SiversΒ on how to handle doubts:
“If you’re in doubt about something that’s not in your life, try it. Things are so different in practice versus in theory. The only way to know is to experience it yourself. … Err on the side of yes. Try it. If it was a mistake, at least youβll know first-hand, instead of always wondering.
If you’re in doubt about something that’s in your life already, get rid of it. Not just things, this goes for identities, habits, goals, relationships, technology, and anything else. Default to not having it, then see how you do without. … Err on the side of no. Get rid of it. Start with a clean slate. If it was a mistake, you’ll get it back with a renewed enthusiasm.”
