"Do More, Plan Less: The Key to Real Accomplishment”
Hey Friends!
I’m writing this newsletter as a personal reminder. Often, I find myself caught up in planning rather than doing. This is a nudge to myself—and to anyone else who needs it—to find real satisfaction in doing things instead of just planning them.
Doing is Doing: The Misconception of Planning
Many people find pleasure in planning rather than in the actual doing of things. This is a mistake.
Often, we get lost in perfecting plans instead of taking action. We should just start doing, regardless of whether a plan is in place or not.
I suffer from this myself. I spend a lot of time planning the ideal schedule, the perfect outcome of a task, or the best way to execute something. It gives me a sense of pleasure and accomplishment, as I visualise the end results being perfect.
However, this pseudo feeling of accomplishment is only momentary. It releases dopamine because our brain enjoys this phase. Ideally, we should shift our dopamine trigger to the act of doing rather than planning.
Because only doing is doing. Planning is not doing. Scheduling is not doing. Telling a friend you are going to do something is not doing. Posting on social media that you are going to do something is not doing. Committing publicly is not doing.
Here is a list of things that are not doing a thing
- Preparing to do the thing is not doing the thing
- Scheduling time to do the thing is not doing a thing
- Making a to do list for the thing is not doing a thing
- Telling people you are going to do the thing is not doing a thing
- Messaging friends who may or may not doing a thing is not doing a thing
- Writing a banger tweet about how to do a thing is not doing a thing
- Hating on yourself for not doing a thing is not doing a thing
- Hating other people who have done a thing is not doing a thing
- Hating the obstacles in the way of you doing a thing is not doing the thing
- Fantasising about all the adoration you will receive once you do the thing is not doing a thing
- Reading about how to do the thing is not doing the thing
- Reading about how other people did the thing is not doing the thing
- Reading this essay is not doing a thing
The only thing that is doing the thing is doing the thing
and I love this insight, you can dress it up however you want
The work just needs to be done!
Quote of the week 💬
You see, whenever you embark on a new journey, it’s likely that you won’t get any results as soon as you start. The list goes on, and the uncomfortable truth is that you’ve got to put in a lot of work (and time) before you see any meaningful results. That’s Year Zero. It’s when you shouldn’t expect to see metrics going up; it’s when you shouldn’t expect to be seeing results; it’s when your only goal should be to start, stay consistent, and keep the momentum going.
