Welcome to this edition of my newsletter!
Today in this episode we are talking about priorities of life.
I got this WhatsApp forward and it was really thoughtful, so thought of sharing it with you guys!
A professor walks into a classroom, setting a few items on the table: a large glass jar, a bunch of rocks, pebbles, and a pile of sand.
He begins by placing the large rocks into the jar, and asks his students if it’s full. They nod “yes”.
He then drops the pebbles into the jar and gives it a shake, they settle in the spaces between the rocks. He asks again, “Is the jar full?” The students, now catching on, nod.
Finally, he pours in the sand, filling every last bit of space in the jar. “Now, is it full?” he asks. The students agree with a smile.
This story acts as a powerful metaphor for priorities: the jar represents our life.
The rocks are the most important elements – our family, health, and basic needs. The pebbles are important but less critical, like our career and hobbies. The sand encompasses everything else—the minor, everyday concerns.
Prioritising the ‘rocks’ in our life means focusing on what’s essential. Even if all else was stripped away, our life would still have purpose if our rocks remain. On the other side, a life filled only with ‘pebbles’ and ‘sand’ may seem busy, but it will lack a true sense of fulfilment.
By taking care of our ‘rocks’, we’ll be better equipped to manage the ‘pebbles’ and ‘sand’ that life will inevitably present.
If you’re struggling to identify the ‘rocks’ in your life, an effective method is the 5/25 Rule. Often attributed to Warren Buffett, this technique involves listing your top 25 priorities and then focusing solely on the top five, setting aside the rest. This approach is about making hard choices and deliberately resisting what might seem important but is ultimately a distraction. It’s a practical tool for aligning our daily actions with our most significant priorities, ensuring the ‘rocks’ aren’t overshadowed by less important tasks.
Take some time this week to examine your own jar.
Are you prioritising your rocks, or spending too much time on pebbles? How much sand has gone between the cracks? You might then realise that some rearranging could be in order.
I hope you gained some insights from reading this!
See you next week!
