#54. Atharv’s Chronicle : 31-07-2026 We have watched enough!

Welcome back to another edition of Atharv’s Chronicle!

I share this newsletter once in 15 days and bit late this time as I was on a vacation with family for a week!

Atharv Prasanna

Coming to the context of this newsletter, In the last 15 days, I’ve watched the lifestyle of minimum 500 people – someone making a quick recipe, someone’s balcony looking like a magazine, someone eating 150 grams of protein every day on just Rs 200, someone finishing a tough monsoon trek, someone celebrating their movie’s success, someone driving home a new car, someone hitting 100k followers on Insta, someone catching the perfect sunset and posting it right after. And the list never ends.

I’ve saved at least 100 of these posts too, to look at again later. The philosophy is simple – I want that lifestyle someday, and I will make it happen.

But here’s the trap though. It gives us a sense of productivity – like we’re actually getting inspired. We’re reading something new, collecting information, saving things for later – etc etc. It gives us a feeling that consuming is somehow preparing us for a new life. But in real life, it’s just us avoiding building one.

We think our identity is at stake compared to others, and I would like to recall a statement from Kunal shah, Cred founder, Whatapp CEO – young people in India and globally worry too much about protecting a “reputation and status” they have not yet built. This fear of judgment stops them from taking risks, making mistakes, and growing – and we spoil it even more by trying to grow it through someone else’s life.

So let’s say this bluntly – baad me jao, getting inspired.

We keep getting this false notion that we’re being inspired. But in reality, we’re not doing any work. We live with a lot of intentions, and none of them get started.

And here’s why. We don’t want to be a beginner. We want to skip straight to good. So we take our own invisible beginning, the one nobody’s watching yet, and put it right next to somebody else’s polished middle.

They were beginners too – we were consuming back then.
They’re getting good at it now – we’re still consuming.
They’ve become masters of their craft – we’re still consuming.

Which is exactly why our wishlist keeps growing and our saved folder keeps getting bigger. Every scroll gives us another flicker – even I can do that. And we mean it, in that moment. We really believe we can.

But the flicker stays exactly where it’s safest – in our head. It’s comfortable there. Comfortable enough to rot quietly, comfortable enough to let us keep the same lifestyle while the thought just sits, buried. We don’t act on it, because not acting is the easier option.

We’ve watched enough.

Here’s the part nobody tells us. Unimplemented knowledge is a burden by default. It doesn’t sit quietly in a corner waiting for us to get around to it, it piles up. Every new flicker we save on top of the ones we never used just adds more weight to a burden we haven’t cleared. And on some random, ordinary day, all of it catches up. We feel hopeless, not because we lack the ability, but because we can suddenly see how much we knew, and how little of it we actually did anything with.

Naval’s Archive has a line that fits here – if we don’t commit to meaningful work, life fills that time with busywork anyway. For most of us, scrolling is that busywork. It just quietly takes up the time our real work was supposed to get.

Naval’s Archive has another one too – discipline comes first, spontaneity comes after. We keep waiting to feel that sudden burst of motivation, like the one a reel gives us for a few seconds. But the spontaneity we admire in others actually comes from discipline we never get to see. We don’t need another flicker of inspiration. We just need one small, boring rep of discipline, today.

Honestly, this whole issue was sparked by a piece Diogo wrote, about being an audience member of our own life. If any of this feels familiar, that’s where to go next – it puts words to this exact feeling.

So here’s what I’m doing about it. Maybe you’ll do it with me.

Let’s flip the list from the start of this newsletter. Instead of watching someone make a recipe, build a balcony, finish a trek – let’s be the someone. Just for one small thing, this week.

Not the whole plan. Not a transformation. Just this:

  • Pick the oldest flicker in our head. The one we’ve been carrying the longest.

  • Give it one hour. Tomorrow morning, before we open anything else.

That’s it. That’s the entire ask.

We’ve watched enough. Let’s give ourselves a story worth watching too.

Question to Ask Yourself? 📝

If we couldn’t watch, save, or scroll through anyone else’s life for the next 30 days, what’s the one thing we’d finally be forced to start on our own?
