We are always very much obsessed with winning, achieving and concurring.
Recently I came across a concept called finite and infinite game of life, it provided refreshing perspective on how we approach various aspects of our life.
As the philosopher James P Carse once said, *“There are at least two kinds of games: **finite and infinite**. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play”*

Think about a game of football. It’s a classic example of a finite game – there’s a set time, a defined scoreline, and ultimately, a winner and a loser. The objective is clear: score more goals than the opposing team within the allotted time.

An infinite game is where you can’t ‘win’ by itself – the aim is to simply continue playing the game. Now, thinking the idea of an infinite game. Picture your relationships with your family or friends. Unlike a football match, there’s no clear endpoint or winner. The goal isn’t to “win” the relationship but rather to nurture it, cherish it, and continue playing the game of connection and love.
This concept has profoundly influenced my personal and professional life.
By incorporating the principles of finite and infinite games into everyday life, we can see a significant shift in our perspective and behaviour.
It’s all about understanding what truly matters, prioritising what’s important, finding a balance and fulfilment from the ongoing journey.
Whenever you feel that you are not getting results in spite of putting efforts.
Learn to pause and analyse which game you’re playing, whether it’s finite or infinite and then adjust the tactics accordingly!
While finite games have their importance in certain places, embracing the infinite game mentality really helps in shifting our perspective which can lead to greater fulfilment, resilience, and meaning in all aspects of life.
