How To Find Joy In A Perfectly Imperfect Life!

Welcome to this edition of my newsletter!

Today, we’re talking about a Japanese philosophy called ‘wabi-sabi’ which talks about celebrating the beauty found in imperfection.

This Philosophy aims at depicting impermanent and Incomplete nature of life. It reminds us to let go of unrealistic standards and expectations and to find joy and happiness in life’s simple and imperfect moments.

Wabi-Sabi combines two Japanese words: “wabi” means simplicity, and “sabi” which represents the beauty that emerges with age, recognising the natural impermanence of all things.

A beautifully repaired crack on a piece of pottery is an example of wabi-sabi. Japanese see the crack as something to be appreciated rather than made invisible.

Wabi-sabi is not just an aesthetic idea; it’s a way of life deeply embedded in Japanese culture.

Here are some ways we can incorporate wabi-sabi into our daily routine:

Strive for excellence, not perfection: Instead of stressing so much about being perfect, Being unique in whatever we do, we can aim to be our best self. It can be anything for that matter, Be it relationships, Game you are playing, Video you want to record and post, Your Hobbies, Your Job etc, We should just focus on getting better without worrying about being perfect.

Keep it simple: We don’t always have to chase and win big to find beauty. Most of the times, it’s just the simplest things that really make us happy. Whether chatting with mom/friends, admiring nature, or just chilling out, there’s beauty all around us if we take the time to notice.

Embrace your story: Taking a moment to think about and write down our own story can help us understand ourself better. Toughest decision we had taken adds resilience, Toughest times we’ve been through adds value and meaning to who we are.

Enjoy the now: Sometimes, we get stuck thinking about the past and wishing things were different. Sometimes worrying about what future might bring, Wabi-sabi is all about letting go of those thoughts and focusing on what’s happening right now. It’s about accepting change and embracing the fact that nothing is permanent.

Once we incorporate wabi-sabi into one part of our life, we’ll begin noticing opportunities to apply it everywhere. Whether it’s in our job, daily routines, or connections with others etc, wabi-sabi encourages us to embrace imperfection over chasing perfection.

Below simple practices can transform our daily life by finding joy in the small, imperfect moments.

  • Practice Gratitude – Start each day by reflecting on the simple things you’re thankful for.
  • Let Go of Control – Accept that not everything is within your control and we should learn to adopt to what comes our way.
  • Cultivate Mindfulness – Be fully present in each moment by paying attention to our surroundings and the experiences happening right now.
  • Celebrate Small Victories – Acknowledge and appreciate even the smallest achievements.
  • Surround Yourself with Positive People – Spend time with individuals who uplift and support you.
  • Find Beauty in the Everyday – Discover and enjoy the simple, everyday moments that bring joy.
  • Be Kind to Yourself – Practice self-compassion by recognizing your efforts and forgiving your mistakes.
  • Pursue Your Passions- Engage in activities that you love and that bring you joy.
