THE BREAK WE NEED (But Rarely Take)
Welcome to this edition of my newsletter
We’re always busy – completing tasks, chasing goals, planning vacations, starting hobbies. Life moves fast, and somewhere in the middle of work, family, social media, and expectations, we slip into survival mode – living life on remote control .
If we want to feel grounded, avoid burnout, and actually live life, we need to be intentional – about our thoughts, actions, and how we spend our time.
Here’s something that’s helped me: planning one intentional day every month around five themes.
these things need not to be luxury, dramatic or exceptional
do it with the available resources, knowledge with as much little effort as possible
it just need a rough plan, little time and small actions
1. Finish the Errands day
Life happens fast
we usually plan so many things and many stays in to do lists only and eventually it becomes a never ending list
so we need to take just one day in a month to complete all the errands which just sits in to do lists all the time
– To pay the bils
– Clear the mail inbox
– Clean the desk
– Throw/sell all the unused stuffs
– Unsubscribe from things which is not needed anymore
– Declutter your room (mind as well)
– Decorate your room etc
it might not be exiting but it is what it is
it is part of life and we need to attend these things
If we just overlook them as petty things – they eventually become a very big list and might pull us down
2. Digital Fasting
We are so caught up in life that we never give our mind to breathe
basically we constantly keep on feeding ourself with so many inputs through gadgets, social media by scrolling, replying, interacting and it never ends
When is the last time you spent a day without checking your phone?
So, just spend a day
– Without checking your phone
– Not using social media
– Away from calls (have in person convos)
– Use screen as less as possible
we might feel it is dramatic, but it really helps
the world is okay even without you going online
you’ll be fine, honestly you feel much better
you can sleep peacefully, think clearly and can feel much lighter
3. Explore on life
We always need not to take luxury vacation to feel alive
once a month, schedule a day for mini adventure
it need not to be bucket list location or long vacation
its about bringing the change by breaking the pattern
we just go on living the life week on week in a auto pilot mode and we forget to notice life
so a day to step out of routine and to try something new
1. Take a random bus – but the ticket to last stop – just observe people
2. Go to new area/place to have a new variety of food
3. Crash a wedding (it’s fun – do it)
4. Go to temple and do volunteering
5. Take a pottery class
6. Go to a local museum/ local play
7. Go to some local production factory and see how it works
8. Play the game you loved as a kid etc
it can be anything which brings a change
remember fun is subjective
define your own fun but never forget to live a life
it doesn’t have to be big, expensive – even if it is for an hour – if you do something new – it sparks curiosity again in life
4. Revisit your goals
When you say goals, it need not to be about exams, marks, project deadlines always
a human growth has to be holistic – read it here – embrace-holistic-living
and if we can dedicate one day in a month to check up on our goals
it will really help in realigning our priorities and help us understand where we stand w.r.t where we want to be!
and also to asses and analyse on our performance – remember “What gets measured – gets improved!” – read it here.
set a day or part of your day in the beginning of the month to set your goals – weekly, bi weekly, monthly depending on your work style/need
and similarly you can set some time each week/ fortnight or on month end to reflect on your performance w.r.t your goals
if we just train our logical brain to work in a organised manner, it does wonders.
surely it does impact – give it try!
5. To Reconnect
Life moves fast and when it does, we tend to drop people, past hobbies and our past beliefs
we might not do it intentionally, but it happens while we catch our deadlines, projects, new friends, new hobbies, new beliefs – it becomes evident to drop the old patterns
but there can be many things/people who might have impacted us in the past
In order to reconnect to things which has impacted, which bought a change, which gave comfort, which gave memories once upon a time
schedule a day
– To call your old friend and have real convos – not just checking up
– To meet that teacher – show how grateful you are
– To restart your sketching hobby
– To go on a slow – no phone walk with your partner
– To reconnect to your God – to align yourself to the divine.
– To restart those spiritual practices etc
life is beautiful when it is a mixture of so many things – Friends, Habits, Practices etc
don’t wait for right time, make the time!
Taking a break need not to be taking off from work or taking vacation to follow these days
Just assign one day a month to one of these themes. Let the rest unfold.
If you show up with intention – life responds!
Hope this resonated with you! See you next week!
