Welcome to this edition of my newsletter!
When your friend gets promoted, do you feel happy for them?
Or does something inside you go – “Why not me?”
Be honest. Most of us have felt that at some point.
And it’s not because we’re bad people. It’s just the way we’ve been wired to think – that life is a race, and if someone else is ahead, we’re somehow behind.
But that’s just not true.
Let me explain this simply
Imagine a pizza.
If there are 8 slices and 8 people – that’s a zero sum situation. If I take 2, someone gets less. One person’s gain is another’s loss.
That’s what a zero sum game means. Fixed resources. If you win, I lose.
Now here’s the thing – most of life doesn’t work like a pizza.
Success is not a pizza. Opportunities are not a pizza. Happiness is definitely not a pizza.
When your friend gets a great job, it doesn’t reduce your chances of getting one. When someone builds a great business, it doesn’t take away your ability to build one too.
The pie is not fixed. It keeps growing. And the best part? When one person bakes more, everyone gets more.
Look around – the proof is everywhere
Think about Chickpet or Malleswaram in Bangalore.
Hundreds of shops selling the exact same things – right next to each other. Sarees. Silk. Utensils. You’d think they’d be killing each other’s business, right?
But the opposite happens. More shops bring more customers. More variety keeps people coming back. Everyone grows together.
Or think about the entire IT industry in Bangalore.
Infosys grew. Wipro grew. TCS grew. Did one company’s success hurt the others? No. Each company’s growth created more talent, more jobs, more opportunities – for everyone. The whole city transformed.
That’s not competition. That’s everyone winning together.
Now think about knowledge.
If I teach you something valuable today – do I become less knowledgeable? No. I actually understand it better myself. You grow. I grow. Nobody lost anything.
That’s a win-win.
And nature figured this out way before us.
Trees release oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide. Bees collect nectar while helping flowers reproduce. It’s all mutual. Everything gives and receives at the same time.
Life sustains itself through mutual benefit. We’re the only ones who turned it into a scoreboard.
So why do we still feel like it’s a competition?
Because we were taught to see it that way.
School gave us ranks. Percentages compared us. College had limited seats. Jobs said “only 2 positions.” So slowly, our brain got wired to think – if they win, I lose.
And then social media came along and made it ten times worse.
We scroll and see someone’s new car, someone’s business win, someone’s travel photos – and we feel like we’re falling behind. Like their win took something away from us.
But think about it clearly –
Their raise didn’t reduce your salary.
Their success didn’t close any door for you.
Their growth didn’t make you smaller.
The only thing standing between you and what you want – is you. Not them.
What changes when you stop seeing life this way?
Everything, honestly.
You start sharing what you know instead of hoarding it – and people start trusting you.
You start celebrating others genuinely – and they root for you too.
You start collaborating instead of competing – and you build things you couldn’t alone.
Help someone get a job they deserve – they will remember you forever.
Support someone’s work publicly – they show up for you when it matters.
Teach someone what you know – you end up understanding it even better yourself.
Generosity is not a weakness. It’s a strategy. And it compounds.
Here’s what I truly believe
At the end of the day, life becomes much lighter when you stop viewing other people as threats.
Another person shining does not dim your light.
The sun does not become smaller because the moon exists.
There is space for everyone.
Yes, some situations are competitive by design – one job opening, one match, one seat. But life as a whole is much larger than those isolated moments. There are billions of people, infinite problems to solve, infinite things to build and create.
Opportunity is not running out.
And sometimes, another person’s success is simply proof that yours is possible too. That one shift in thinking changes your entire energy. Instead of jealousy, you feel inspired. Instead of comparison, you focus on contribution.
And contribution is where real abundance begins.
Life was never designed to be a battlefield where only one person wins.
It was designed to be an ecosystem – where we rise better together.
See you in the next one!
