#59. Atharv’s Chronicle : 15-10-2026 Why the Small Promises Matter!

Welcome back to another edition of Atharv’s Chronicle!

Atharv Prasanna

As promised in the last episode, I was supposed to share this on the 20th. I drafted it before the 20th, but I’m sharing it early morning on the 21st. A few hours late – and since this edition is all about honouring the promises we make to ourselves, I wanted to be honest about that first.

The small promises we make to ourselves

The small promises we make to ourselves – if we keep honouring them with integrity, our subconscious mind gets stronger, and it helps us build a strong character.

Think about all the small things we say to ourselves every day. I will do this. I will complete that. I will be there by that time. I won’t do that again.

We don’t even think of them as promises. But each one opens a tab in our subconscious mind. And that tab keeps lingering until we close it.

By default, our subconscious mind doesn’t differentiate between a big task and a small task. For it, making a million dollars is a task. Meeting someone on time as promised is also a task. Both are commitments, and both are being tracked.

So if we just keep honouring the small commitments we make to ourselves – making a commitment and living up to it, making a commitment and living up to it – in other words, saying it and doing it, saying it and doing it – we train our subconscious to trust us. And that trust becomes our confidence.

Why the small ones matter

When I make a commitment and don’t honour it, it might look like nothing happened on the outside. But so much damage happens on the inside.

Say, for example, I decide to wake up by 7 AM and go to the gym. The alarm rings. I snooze it. I snooze it again. I wake up at 7:30 and miss the gym. From the outside, it’s just one missed workout. Not a big deal.

But inside, my subconscious just noted one more time that I said something and didn’t do it. And it remembers. So when I set a big goal in the future – say, building a 10 crore organisation – it simply asks me:

“You couldn’t even achieve something that was fully in your control – waking up at 7 AM. How will you achieve things that are not in your control?”

That’s the real damage. Not the missed workout – the lost trust in myself.

If I say it, I will do it

This has truly been a life changing principle for me. Once I understood it, I’ve been trying to live by one simple rule:
If I say it, I will do it. Or else I won’t even say it.
This eliminates the unnecessary tabs, keeps my subconscious mind free of clutter, and lets me guide it to work efficiently on only the tasks that really matter.

And on days when something genuinely comes up, I’d rather be honest with myself – “not today, I’ll do it tomorrow at 6” – than let the commitment quietly break.

Consistency is the key

And this has to be done consistently. Every commitment honoured adds to the trust. Every commitment broken takes it away.

With inconsistency – we get stuck in a vicious cycle.
With consistency – we build an upward spiral.

Your turn

Pick one small promise you keep making to yourself and keep breaking. Waking up on time, a workout, a call you keep postponing. This week, do one of two things: honour it every day, or drop it and stop saying it. Either way, close the tab.

To sum it up

Every promise you make to yourself opens a tab in your subconscious mind.
Honour it or don’t make it – that’s how you close it.
Small commitments honoured consistently build the confidence you need for the big goals.

Question to Ask Yourself? 📝

What is one promise I keep making to myself, and what system would make keeping it the default?
